HOLTVILLE — A sheepherder was killed in a collision that left him decapitated early Wednesday near the intersection of Norrish road and Highway 115, authorities said.

The man, who was identified by Imperial County Deputy Coroner Rodolfo Barron as 31-year-old Braulio Camayo Galvan, was herding sheep from a field near the intersection of Highway 115 and Norrish Road to a field on Keystone Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Sanchez reported.

As Camayo and part of the herd were walking in the northbound lane of Highway 115, the driver of a 1995 GMC Sonoma pickup truck, Jesus Meza Cosio, was approaching the intersection at 60 mph, Sanchez said.

Cosio, a 68-year-old El Centro resident, was heading north on Highway 115 during the incident that was reported at 5:48 a.m., the officer said in a statement.

While Cosio saw an amber light flashing ahead of his location to the east of the roadway, Cosio was unable to see the sheep or Camayo on the roadway because of the darkness.

Cosio struck a number of sheep before hitting Camayo. The impact caused Cosio to lose control of his truck before coming to a rest east of Highway 115.

Camayo lived in Calexico but was originally from Peru, the Highway Patrol reported.

Fight breaks out in jail court

IMPERIAL COUNTY — No injuries were reported Wednesday when an inmate charged with the attempted sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy was attacked by another inmate in jail court.

Forty-year-old Armando Meraz, who was arrested Feb. 10 on suspicion of attempting to kidnap the boy in Brawley, was assaulted by an inmate identified as Alberto Padilla, an unnamed source said.

A bailiff and two correctional officers put a quick end to the tumult that erupted shortly before 1:30 p.m., when arraignments were set to be heard, the source said.
