IMPERIAL COUNTY - Two people died at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area during the busy President’s Day weekend, according to U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials.

One death involved a juvenile hit by a sand rail Saturday. No more information was available at press time.


BRAWLEY - People trapped in submerged vehicle

Several people were trapped in a submerged vehicle near Hoskins and West Cady roads west of Brawley on Saturday afternoon, according to Imperial County Sheriff Office call logs.

The medical emergency call was reported at 6:45 p.m. Two people were removed from the car, and two remained trapped inside the car.

The Imperial Irrigation District was able to close a gate south of the location which helped bring the water level down. No more information was available at press time.


EL CENTRO - Man allegedly takes jeans

A man tried to steal about 10 pairs of jeans from Sears on Saturday night, according to El Centro Police Department call logs.

The police received the call at 8:44 p.m. that the man had taken the clothing and was seen getting in a car on the west side of the building.

Suspect Jonathan Martinez, 21, was arrested and booked into Imperial County Sheriff’s Office jail for petty theft.
