BRAWLEY — The Salvation Army store here was left without power after a stack of donated books left in the alley behind the Main Street thrift store caught fire Saturday night, damaging the establishment’s electricity meters. Authorities have labeled the fire as “suspicious” and continue to investigate its cause, while no witnesses or suspects have been identified, said police Chief Mark Gillmore.

The fire was contained to hundreds of books donated over the weekend by the Brawley Public Library and left in a large stack against the rear exterior wall. Flames and heat damaged the electricity meters, which were located just above the stack of books.
