CALEXICO - An autopsy is scheduled today for a man whose body was found Monday in the All American Canal, an official said.
The body was found at about 9:06 a.m. by an employee of the Imperial Irrigation District at the Drop 4 location several miles east of Calexico, said Imperial County Deputy Coroner Jesus Lara.
Drugs seized
CALEXICO - Almost 4 tons of narcotics were seized over the weekend in two separate incidents by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the east cargo facility.
The biggest drug seizure occurred Friday when a drug-sniffing dog alerted CBP officers to more than 7,500 pounds of marijuana hidden inside cardboard boxes mixed with radishes and Brussels sprouts inside a tractor trailer, a press statement read.
The unidentified driver, of Mexico, was arrested in connection with the drug find that carried an estimated street value of $7.5 million.
On Saturday a 47-year-old Mexican citizen who was behind the wheel of a 2000 Chevrolet pickup was arrested after CBP officers found 10 pounds of methamphetamine in the bed floor.
The illegal drug came wrapped in packages of six and carried an estimated street value of about $110,000, the statement reported.
Decedent identified
EL CENTRO - The Imperial County Coroner’s Office identified Monday the Oceanside woman who died in a rollover crash that occurred on Interstate 8 over the weekend.
Katrina Kessler, 23, died during the Saturday morning crash that happened near Imperial Avenue on westbound Interstate 8, Lara said.
Kessler was, according to the California Highway Patrol, an unrestrained passenger in a Nissan Titan pickup that struck the rear of a tractor trailer. The driver of the pickup had fallen asleep behind the wheel, the Highway Patrol reported.
Motorist identified
OCOTILLO - The motorist who ran off the road Sunday on the north side of Interstate 8 died of natural causes, Lara said.
The man was identified as 64-year-old Valley Center resident John Amaso, Lara said. The crash occurred east of Ocotillo, Lara said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
