EL CENTRO - An unoccupied house on Ross Avenue and Dogwood Road caught fire Thursday morning, an El Centro fire official said.
The fire occurred just after 7 a.m. and was reported by passersby, said Battalion Chief Ken Herbert.
“It was certainly disruptive to the morning commute,” he said referring to the fire that started in one room of the house and spread to the attic.
El Centro firefighters were on scene for about one hour, Herbert said, and added the house sustained “moderate damage.”
The source of the fire is still under investigation.
Ice cream truck catches fire
An ice cream truck caught fire at Euclid Avenue and Fourth Street while unattended Thursday.
The incident took place around 5:15 p.m. after resident Daniel Flores was testing the ice cream truck that Flores and his son are fixing. “I felt that it ran out of gasoline,” said Flores in Spanish.
He left the truck on the side of the road and went to the gas station. Upon his return he found the truck on fire.
There was minimal damage, said El Centro fire Capt. Brad Wilkinson.
“Pretty much all the fire was contained on the front,” he said.
How the truck caught fire is under investigation. No ice cream was kept in the truck at the time of the incident, according to Wilkinson.
Reckless driving, riding
A female in a green Ford Explorer was seen driving inside the Valley Plaza Shopping Center parking lot while a male was outside, holding onto the vehicle and trying to get inside.
The incident was reported at 4:24 p.m. Wednesday, according to El Centro police call logs, but the vehicle was gone by the time police arrived at the scene.
Gas leak
IMPERIAL - A gas leak forced officials to close Imperial Avenue near East Barioni Boulevard for about an hour Thursday morning, a Southern California Gas Company official said.
Around 10 a.m. an elderly lady parking in a handicapped spot hit the gas, jumped a parking spot and hit the gas meter of a business and damaging it, said Joe Montenegro, district manager of the Southern California Gas Co.
