SALTON CITY - A 25-year-old United States citizen was arrested while attempting to smuggle an estimated $192,000 in methamphetamine Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at the Highway 86 checkpoint near here around 5 a.m. after a United States Border Patrol canine team alerted to a 1999 Chevrolet pickup, according to a press statement.
During further inspection, agents used a large-scale imaging system to scan the vehicle and discovered six pounds of methamphetamine concealed within two fire extinguishers behind the passenger side seat, the release says.
The driver, vehicle and methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Hazardous material spill on I-8, lane closes
A hazardous material spill was reported on Interstate 8 after a truck started spilling apparent ammonia on the roadway.
The semi-truck appeared to be leaking the liquid after it exited westbound Interstate 8 about 12:45 p.m. at Grays Well Road, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Web site. One lane of traffic was closed as groups, including the Imperial County Fire Department and California Emergency Management Agency, looked over the site, but the lanes were reopened at 2 p.m.
