BRAWLEY — Buoyed by a healthy reserve fund despite the state’s bleak economic prospects, Brawley Elementary School District interim Superintendent Roberto Moreno recommended that no layoff notices be prepared between now and March 15.

Moreno’s recommendation was accepted by the school board during its Tuesday meeting where Leslie Marshall, director of fiscal services, also gave a presentation.

The BESD could lose $1.3 million under Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed budget if voters fail to pass a November tax measure aimed at generating money for schools. The budget slashes spending on transportation, or busing, for schools.

California schools could face losing roughly $4.8 billion in trigger cuts which would force the BESD and other school districts across the state to make drastic midyear cuts in the 2012-13 school year.

Despite the grim fiscal outlook, a review of the BESD’s first interim report by the Imperial County Office of Education shows that the district has a current revenue limit in 2011-12 of $6.2 million.

While the reserve funds appear to look good, Moreno and Marshall urged the district to be cautious about spending decisions in the months ahead.

Districts planning to impose layoffs must do so by the March 15 deadline as required by state law.
