BRAWLEY — Former Brawley Elementary School District Superintendent Ron Garcia appeared before board members Tuesday to publicly specify the terms of contract proposal that the governing body discussed during a closed session meeting.

The results of that meeting were not immediately known at press time but Garcia said he would accept a salary of $135,000 to come back as school superintendent through June 30, 2013, adding the salary was what he would’ve received under the terms of his two-year contact before he was fired last year.

Garcia requested to have his presentation placed on the meeting’s agenda.

Gerald Conradi, the San Diego-based attorney representing the district, said any final contract would have to be voted on during a public meeting.

Garcia had been let go before his contract was set to expire June 30, which touched off a heated outcry from supporters and led to lawsuits filed by Garcia and an advocacy group against the district.

In December the board, with newly elected members, voted to enter into negotiations for the reinstatement of Garcia. Currently, Roberto Moreno is interim superintendent.

Eric Reyes, executive director of the Institute for Socio-Economic Justice Inc., was among a number of supporters who called for Garcia’s reinstatement in order to save the district money on attorney’s fees and related expenses.

The group Reyes heads sued the district on Garcia’s behalf but later dropped its lawsuit when the BESD voted on its intent to head toward reinstating Garcia.
