A legion of budding scientists was honored with an invitation to participate in an annual San Diego fair following an event at Imperial Valley College.

Saturday’s local science fair sponsored by the Imperial County Office of Education resulted in 58 students from mostly private schools throughout the Imperial Valley displaying an array of science projects.

The students in the seventh through the 12th grades each vied for a spot to compete in the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair at Balboa Park next month, Queana Givens, coordinator of the fair at IVC, has said.

Students who won an invitation to the Balboa Park science fair included Steven Campos, Reyes Ortiz, Alany Valle, Almarita Jacobo, Chris Hernandez, Alex Maloof and Crista Oakley-Havens from Central Union High School.

Other students included Zeyma Martinez, Ana Raselia Arce, Maximilien Moreno and Andrew Roman, all from Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy.

Betty Miller, a science coach from Brawley Christian Academy, said most of the students started their projects at the beginning of the school year and that depending on the complexity of the project required the most time.

The submission of science projects from private schools is a reflection on how many of them “can offer a diverse curriculum” in the areas of science, Smith said.

But Smith also stated that the success of a science project largely depends on how much effort a student puts in it.

“It just kind of depends on the child’s motivation,” Smith said.
