CALEXICO — U.S. Army Sgt. Odin Ayala received a standing ovation after receiving a proclamation at Tuesday’s City Council meeting honoring him for his military service.

The 2003 Calexico High School graduate and football player was severely injured and lost both of his legs Sept. 14 when an improvised explosive device was detonated as he was leading his platoon on patrol in Afghanistan.

“The city of Calexico is forever indebted to Sgt. Odin Ayala for his quiet courage and exemplary service,” and “remembers and honors those who have made selfless sacrifices for the continuance of peace and extending freedom around the world,” the proclamation reads.

Jose Vindiola of American Legion Goree Lake Post 90 of Calexico also presented Ayala with a year’s free membership to the American Legion Post and thanked him for his service “on behalf of all veterans.”

Ayala said he was very grateful for the honor. A short meeting break was called after the proclamation in order for everyone who wished to speak with Ayala to do so.
