Heading into Thursday’s Imperial Valley League track and field meet, Central Union High’s boys’ team was undefeated in league and Southwest High’s girls’ team was also undefeated.
After the meet both teams stayed that way as the Spartans and the Eagles split the meet at Southwest in El Centro.
The Spartan boys stayed perfect, winning 70-56.
“I think we did a lot better than we did against Brawley last meet. We beat Brawley, but they outcoached us and taught us a valuable lesson,” Central head coach Ron Shane said. “We responded well today and I’m happy with our guys. We have a lot of seniors and depth, which is great.”
On the girls’ side the Eagles remained unscathed with a close 68-53 win.
“The girls did fantastic today … we pulled it out and had some outstanding performances from our throwers and distance runners,” Southwest Head coach Richard Bird said. “We are improving greatly each week and we saw that today as some girls stepped up and got some (personal record times) in the wind.”
Central (boys, 4-0; girls, 2-2) will host Calexico at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Southwest (boys, 0-3; girls, 3-0) will play at Brawley Union at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. It will be a matchup of undefeated girls’ teams.
“Today was a good day but next week is going to be interesting against Brawley,” Bird said. “It’s going to be some kinda showdown.”
