The approval of the sewer and water master plans of the city, which lists future infrastructure projects such as replacement of old pipes and the construction of new water tanks, will be discussed by the El Centro City Council tonight.
Such plans are developed to accommodate the city’s growth, said Mayor Sedalia Sanders.
Improvements to the water and sewer systems will benefit residential households as well as businesses and manufacturing, she said.
About 14 miles of old pipes, eight new tanks and pump station improvements are some of the projects listed in the plan, according to a report to the council.
“Combined with the existing improvements, the total length of pipe installations is approximately 91 miles,” the report reads.
Storage tanks are a high priority in the plan, according to the report, with five tanks expected to be installed before 2015. Pump station improvements are expected to be phased in after 2015.
The total cost of the water system projects is about $310 million, according to the report. The plan covers projects that can be required as late as the year 2100.
Sewer master plan
The city’s wastewater treatment plant is working within capacity, according to a report to the council, but the plant water pump stations are in poor structural condition.
In addition, the plan calls for some $25 million to be spent in the next two decades in similar capital improvements that would prevent deterioration of the wastewater treatment plant’s infrastructure.
