HOLTVILLE — A charity golf tournament sponsored by a local nonprofit group that helps neglected and abused children is set today at the Barbara Worth Resort & Country Club.
Proceeds will go toward helping support the children who are cared for by C.H.A.R.L.E.E. Family Care Inc., officials said.
Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and raffle tickets will be for sale. The event is expected to continue until 4 p.m.
Founded in 1978 in El Centro, the private nonprofit organization whose acronym means Children Have All Rights Legal, Emotional and Educational operates five licensed homes in the Imperial Valley but only three of them are operational, said Richard Rios, executive director.
State cutbacks of about $150,000 over the past three years in the El Centro area alone have impacted what the organization does as state lawmakers pushed to have children cared for by C.H.A.R.L.E.E. sent to live with their biological parents, relatives or in foster homes, Rios said.
The income for C.H.A.R.L.E.E. is earned by the amount of kids placed in its care, Rios said. The organization has expanded to San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
“We’re not getting the referrals that we used to,” Rios said.
