Local produce was sold by Imperial during the inaugural tri-tip cook-off at Eager Park in Imperial on Saturday. Food booths, games, crafts and music were provided.

IMPERIAL — As patrons were entertained by an inaugural tri-tip cook-off at Eager Park and a parade on Imperial Avenue aimed at highlighting next week’s fair, the city’s Market Days also got under way.

The event Saturday featured 75 vendors as patrons bought items that included lettuce, celery, rainbow chard and other vegetables from the produce section.

Putting the parade (that kicked off the upcoming 2012 California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta) and the festivities at the park (that also included the first cook-off) along with the open market event was done in conjunction with the fair, said Ember Haller, parks and recreation program coordinator.

The annual fair opens Friday and runs through March 11.

While she said it was difficult to say exactly how much the Market Days event garnered in terms of money,  Haller said the number of vendors itself was by far the most that the Market Days featured.

“I think so,” Haller said. “They’ll be more the next time around.”

The next Imperial Market Days is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 17.
