IMPERIAL — Beginning this summer, students at Imperial Valley College will begin to pay a higher amount of money for their parking permits.

The IVC board of education unanimously voted to increase the parking permit fees at its meeting here Wednesday.

Currently, parking permits are $20 for vehicles and $10 for motorcycles during the fall and spring semesters.

During the summer, those prices fall to $10 for vehicles and $7 for motorcycles.

After the approval of the increases, the fees will be $25 for vehicles and $15 for motorcycles during the spring and fall semesters and $15 for vehicles and $12 for motorcycles during the summer.

This is the first time since 2006 the fees have been increased, said Jon Lau, vice president for business services.

The increased fees are meant to stay in line with inflation as well as help offset the cost of a new online parking permit service.

The service includes online ordering, production of the parking permit, postage, applicable credit card charges and live telephone customer assistance.

“During the beginning of each semester students have to wait in a long line to get their permits from the security office,” Lau said. “The office does not accept credit cards and it’s inconvenient for some students to pay with just cash or a check.”

The online system will allow students to pay for the permit at their convenience and it will also be delivered to their home.

There will still be a grace period at the beginning of each semester, which will give students the opportunity to buy their permits if they haven’t done so already, Lau said.
