IMPERIAL — El Centro Fire Department was the victor in an intense yet friendly competition waged among local law enforcement personnel during the fifth annual Guns & Hoses event at the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta on Wednesday night.
Two different teams from Calipatria State Prison came in at second and third.
“It’s just nice to be able to see law enforcement come together and participate in competition. It keeps everything fun,” said Melissa Serrano, there to support her husband who was competing on the California Highway Patrol team.
Also in the crowd to support the teams was Vicky Freeman, a correctional officer from Calipatria State Prison.
“I just wanted to support my coworkers as a team,” she said.
Fair Chief Executive Officer Theresa Garcia explained the teams compete in surprise games and the traditional tug-of-war.
The intense competition saw a total of six teams competing in the challenges including firefighters, Army personnel and security personnel, as well as the California Highway Patrol and state prison correctional officers.
In the spirit of experiencing all of the fair’s magic, organizers made this year’s surprise challenge a twist on an old fairy tale, as the teams ran around an obstacle course blindfolded ending the challenge by kissing a stuffed animal frog.
“I like it a lot,” Brawley resident Audrey Mendoza said. “It has been really fun and the guys are pretty intense.”
