CALEXICO — All things will be purple, green and gold when the Calexico Mardi Gras king and queen are crowned at the Calexico Chamber of Commerce’s 13th annual Mardi Gras’ “A Beer Tasting Xperience.”
The 2012 Mardi Gras king and queen nominees include a variety of community members including a city councilman, the police chief and business owners.
They are Daniel Fitzgerald and Kelli Graham, Daniel and Margie Romero, Jim and Brenda Neujahr, William and Penny Meza and Luis “Chino” and Francina Gonzalez.
“They’re really excited and do a lot for the community,” said Calexico Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Hildy Carrillo.
They were nominated through a variety of sources including Mi Calexico, Actitude magazine and the chamber’s board of directors.
“It’s an honor to be the king or queen of anything,” Carrillo said. “If you were nominated, that means some people think you’re a good person and doing something in the community. They all have a story.”
Carrillo added that Daniel Romero, one of the nominees, was the person that founded the event 13 years ago when he was president of the chamber.
“He’s kept it alive ever since,” she said.
The Feb. 17 event at the Calexico Cultural Arts Center will feature food, beer, prizes, dancing, beads and masks and music.
Visitors will receive two tickets at the door of the event to vote on a king and queen couple, and additional tickets for voting will be available for purchase.
Event tickets are $25 a person, and sponsorship levels range from $150 to $1,000.
The event is also a fundraiser for the chamber.
“The moneys that we raise from Mardi Gras will stay in the community, and we’ll spend it on promotion for the city of Calexico,” Carrillo said.
