Cyclists on westbound Ross Avenue use headlamps at sunset Friday as the moon rises in the sky during the Moonlight Bike Ride. The riders started at 7 p.m. behind the Finish Line Pro Bike Shop in El Centro and headed west to Sunbeam Lake in Seeley and then back to Burgers & Beer restaurant in El Centro. |
Wheels spun in the moonlight Friday as Imperial Valley Velo Club and Finish Line Bike Shop hosted their first moonlight bike ride of the year.
I.V. Velo Club president Brian McNeece said about 17 people participated in the roughly 17-mile ride from downtown El Centro to Sunbeam Lake west of town and back.
“I like to pick a day with a full moon so when you ride back you see the sun set and the moon come up,” he said. “It’s very beautiful.”
Riders’ ages ranged between 14 years old to 77 years old Friday night. A variety of bikes including cruisers, tandem, mountain and road bikes were used, McNeece said.
Finish Line Bike Shop co-owner Alex Quintero rode a tandem bike Friday for the ride.
He said the event provided a chance to get to know other cyclists in the area.
“It was actually really nice and cool. At the same time, we were all riding our bikes but also all talking about stuff,” he said. “Instead of sitting down, we were actually having a conversation on our bikes.”
The cyclists ended the ride at Burgers and Beer on Imperial Avenue in El Centro.
Velo Club member John Kennerson said he enjoyed the ride Friday.
“With it being a full moon, you didn’t need a whole lot of light to get by,” he said. “It was kind of neat.”
McNeece hopes to make moonlight bike rides a monthly event.
