IMPERIAL — Ten days next month will offer Imperial Valley residents a chance to run into old friends and revisit some of the attractions at the 2011 California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta at the Imperial Valley Expo.

While the annual event promises to feature as many as 40 mechanical rides and eye-grabbing displays at the Preble Building, the theme of this year’s extravaganza will be tied to the timely issue of green, or renewable, energy.

Called “It’s a Green Thing: Celebrating Our Renewable Future,” the theme behind the fair will focus on environmentally minded contests, exhibits and other features.

The fair kicks off March 4 and runs through March 13. This year’s event will also feature the March 10 appearance of veteran actor Danny Trejo, who is scheduled to host a live concert at the Imperial Valley Expo.

“Fair-goers can start now, even before the fair opens — by texting the word “green” to 88202,” Theresa Garcia, chief executive officer of the fair, said in a statement. “That will enable them to receive inside details, discounts and prize information only available to those on the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta’s messaging list.

Participation in the fair’s text campaign is free, but standard carrier messaging rates will apply.
