IMPERIAL — The Imperial Valley College Board of Trustees will not be looking to change its representation from seven to five members in the November 2012 election.

The board voted 6-1 to reject the resolution with trustee Norma Galindo voting to accept at a board meeting Wednesday.

The acceptance of the resolution might have resulted in savings to the college’s general fund as a smaller membership would require less staff support and make for a more efficient board, according to the resolution.

Yet the board voted to reject the resolution as current laws would have required a demographer to draw lines around the representatives of Holtville and Winterhaven who shall be elected in November 2012 since their terms would not end until 2014.

“Right now the proposed redrawing of those lines would have been combined Holtville and Winterhaven,” said IVC interim Superintendent/President Victor Jaime.

“By law their terms are protected so in order to make (the redistricting) work we would’ve drawn some artificial lines,” he said. “It would’ve limited the options that the community committee would’ve been able to propose.”

In addition, the board voted 5-2 to accept a proposed demographer with which to work on the redistricting lines with the to-be-appointed community committee with trustees Norma Galindo and Steve Taylor voting to reject it.

The demographer will cost IVC about $25,500.
