Like a host of other people before her Rosita Delgadillo was hoping to land a job.
Delgadillo and many others looking for work Sunday were busily filling out applications for part-time positions at a job fair hosted by Kohl’s department store. The job fair took place at the Holiday Inn Express in El Centro.
Finding a job is especially important for Delgadillo, who has been out of work for almost a year and recently became displaced from her El Centro apartment from water damage it sustained during a fire that scorched another unit, she said.
Even though the positions are not full-time, Delgadillo, a single mother of six children, is willing to find something.
“Maybe I can get lucky right now,” Delgadillo said. “It’s very high unemployment in the Valley.”
The search for work brought an untold number of people to the hotel off Fourth Street where Kohl’s representatives took the job applications, and a few resumes, during the job fair that is slated to last until Thursday.
None of the store representatives were authorized to comment about the event but a print advertisement read that “register operators, department associates” and other positions need to be filled for the Kohl’s store location at East Danenburg Drive and South Dogwood Road near the Imperial Valley Mall.

Applicants submitted their applications, sat inside an air-conditioned room and waited to hear their names called during the job fair.
Louis Velazco, 17, and his mother Carmen Montelongo, were on hand looking for work but did not mind at all that the positions Kohl’s were offering are part-time. That’s exactly what the pair were looking for, the mother and son from El Centro said.
“I wanted part-time because I’m going to school,” said Velazco, who’ll be attending Imperial Valley College in the fall.
“I think they’re all right,” Velazco said about the chances of getting hired. “I think they’re hiring young people.”
Montelongo, like her son, was also looking for a job that would accommodate her school schedule at IVC.
“This is good because it’s only part-time,” she said. “For me it’s good.”
But for Jose Vasquez, a 19-year-old Imperial resident, any work —full or part-time — would be OK with him.
“I just need something to start off with,” Vasquez said. “And then I’ll go from there.”
