Imperial Valley’s legislator has been named a leader of economic development.
Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez, D-Coachella, announced Tuesday that he had been named the 2012 Legislator of the Year by the California Association for Local Economic Development, according to a press release from his office. Three other Imperial Valley projects were also honored at the California association’s conference.
“It is an honor to be recognized by CALED, whose members are on the front lines of economic development and job creation,” Pérez said at the 32nd annual conference. “There is a transformative power to growing jobs within a community … as chair of the Jobs Committee, I am pleased to be working in partnership with local economic professionals throughout our state to widen the circle of prosperity through economic development, by empowering local communities through the dignity of work, and by supporting the entrepreneurial spirit that will lead us successfully into the future.
“The power of economic development activities is that it not only lifts people up, but just as importantly it creates the circumstances where people can lift themselves up,” he said. “I am committed to working in partnership with local governments and the business community for the economic empowerment of California communities.”
Pérez serves as the Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy. He was recently appointed to lead the Business and Economic Development Task Force for the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, which is a national coalition of Latino legislative leaders.
At the conference, the association also presented its annual Awards of Excellence, celebrating projects and programs that have made significant contributions to the field of economic development. Of the 13 awards presented at the event, three of them recognized Imperial Valley economic development efforts.
The Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation Business Services Program received the grand prize for economic development programs, according to the press release. The city of El Centro’s Business Visitation Program and Business Recognition Program also took the award of excellence for economic development program, and Community Valley Bank’s El Centro Administrative Center Branch together with Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation received the award of excellence for economic development partnerships.
