IMPERIAL — Juanita Salas officially took her seat as a member of the Imperial Valley College Board of Trustees before family and friends here Wednesday.

Salas was sworn in by the Superior Court Judge Juan Ulloa and was accompanied by her mother, Juanita.

“It’s very emotional to have my mother here with me,” Salas said. “It means everything to me to have her, my seven brothers and sisters and my nieces and nephews here.”

Salas said she was also grateful to have the support of the community and the board of education.

“I’m looking forward to serving on the board and just trying to make a difference,” Salas said.

Salas was provisionally appointed to fill the Trustee Area 5 seat on Jan. 23 following the resignation of former Area 5 Trustee Norma Sierra Galindo.

Galindo stepped down as an IVC trustee on Dec. 7 to take her seat as board member of the Imperial Irrigation District.

Salas participated in her first board meeting later Wednesday evening, saying she was excited to begin making a difference in students’ lives.

“There are a few items on the agenda that I want to hear the students’ opinion on,” Salas said. “There may be changes to the parking permit fee so I’m excited to work with students and see what they think.”

The provisional appointment of Salas saved the college the $25,000 cost of a special election.
