IMPERIAL COUNTY - An 81-year-old motorcyclist died from his injuries during a solo wreck off eastbound Highway 22, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified Pete Allen, of Palm Desert, as the rider of a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle that inexplicably ran off the north road edge and overturned Saturday on the north dirt shoulder of the roadway, said Highway Patrol Officer Heraclio Cardenas.

Allen suffered head injuries during the 4:35 p.m. collision that required a trip to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Cardenas said. Allen died four hours after he was taken to the hospital, the Riverside County Coroner’s Office reported.

The fatal crash occurred east of the Imperial County line.
