CALEXICO — View the creative exploration of the mythical and magical at “The Incredible World of Fantasy Art” art exhibition, which opens tonight and culminates Thursday when a meet-the-artist reception will be held.
“I think it’s really neat to show people in the Valley that fantasy art is really popular,” Calexico Arts Commissioner Sergio Gaytan said. “With fantasy, you have to be so creative as far as drawing all these characters that you basically have in your mind. It has to be a very creative field. It can be dragons, gladiators, sirens … it’s really fascinating.”
Fantasy’s popularity with younger generations as well as his love of comics in his youth inspired Gaytan to propose a fantasy-themed show.
The free event, organized by the Calexico Arts Commission, features artists from both sides of the border.
Around 20 artists will show roughly 50 pieces at the event, and media will include everything from photography to acrylic to oils.
The pieces being shown greatly range in size, and one artist even created pieces drawn on handkerchiefs, Calexico Arts Commission chairwoman Hildy Carrillo said.
More than 200 visitors are expected to come through the exhibit this week.
“Hopefully we have a good turnout. Every time we have an art exhibit people want to see more,” Gaytan explained. “This is the first fantasy art show we’re going to have so hopefully we’ll be having more.”
