CALEXICO — Members and visitors of the Women’s Improvement Club of Calexico showed off their favorite flowers and plants during the club’s annual Flower Show and Luncheon on Saturday.
The service club has about 30 members, and member Ana Rosa Renison said that the event is something she looks forward to every year.
“I love gardening, and I love to be in this club,” she said. “It’s very nice.”
Renison brought five of her plants to the event where members discussed their flowers or plants with some sharing personal connections to a certain one, such as it being their mother’s favorite.
Club members brought everything from cactus varieties to cut flowers to red geraniums ready for planting.
They first shared a meal before luncheon guest speaker and Imperial Irrigation District Director Stella Mendoza provided information about how members can save both energy and money.
IID Director John Pierre-Menvielle also spoke to the club about local water issues.
The club is a nonprofit organization that does fundraising for a variety of purposes including providing scholarships to local students, club President Mary Medina said.
