ENCINITAS, Calif. -- Marine mammal experts from SeaWorld were unable to save an ill or injured dolphin that beached itself on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas Monday afternoon.

Lifeguards received a call about a dolphin in distress at about 2:40 p.m. They located the ailing mammal in shallow water about 100 yards south of the lifeguard tower at Moonlight State Beach.

Two lifeguards tried to get the dolphin to swim out to deeper water, but they quickly realized that the animal was too weak to do so. They lifted the animal onto a rigid body board and carried it onto the beach.

SeaWorld experts arrived at the beach at around 3:20 p.m. The dolphin died shortly before 4 p.m., while they were examining it.
