The goal of preparing first-generation college-bound students for a four-year university has long been a commitment of local educators. Yet as a recent report by the Washington D.C.-based Excelencia in Education has highlighted, the number of Latinos in California who have earned an associate degree or higher is significantly lower than the rate for all adults — 16 percent compared to 39 percent, respectively.
Here in the Valley, where 79 percent of high school grads went on to enroll in a post-secondary institution in 2009, the goal is to have students college- and career-ready by the time they reach their senior year in high school.
