Vista Latina: Study reveals possible link between aggressive breast cancer, breastfeeding in women of Mexican descent

Posted: Tuesday, January 21, 2014 1:00 am

A recent binational breast cancer study suggests there may be a link between breastfeeding and developing an aggressive type of breast cancer in women of Mexican descent. Prior research had suggested that the incidence of breast cancer was lower in women that breastfed, had multiple children and give birth at a younger age, a profile which fits many Mexican and Mexican-American women.

“We think there is something about the types of breast tumors that occur in women who breastfeed that might make (the tumors) more aggressive,” said Dr. Elena Martinez, lead author of the study.
