CALEXICO --- An El Centro man who suffered several gunshot wounds in Mexicali was flown out today from the East Port of Entry to an undisclosed hospital for his injuries, a fire official said.

A statement from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection about the 10:56 a.m. call involving the 57-year-old victim was not immediately available, but Imperial County Fire Capt. Luis Andrade from Station Two in Heber said the man suffered three shots: one gunshot to his left hand, another to his wrist and another to his leg.

The man whose name was not released appeared to have also suffered an injury to his head but it was not certain whether if it was a gunshot wound. The man was conscious enough to drive himself in his Ford F-150 pickup, Andrade said, to the Port of Entry where he was directed to the secondary area of inspection.

A helicopter landed nearby the Port of Entry to fly the injured man to a hospital outside the area. The man's medical condition was not known at press time. Initial scanner traffic reported the man suffered two gunshot wounds.
