No one was seriously hurt today when an inmate facing charges of the attempted sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy was attacked by another inmate at the Imperial County Jail.
The tumult occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. when the inmate, 40-year-old Brawley resident Armando Meraz, was assaulted by another inmate identified as Alberto Padilla, according to a source who was familiar with the incident.
Meraz was also arrested Feb. 10 on suspicion of attempted kidnapping.
No other inmates were involved as a bailiff and two corrections officers put a stop to the assault that happened before arraignments were to be heard, the source said. Imperial County Sheriff Ray Loera said he was informed about the incident by Undersheriff Fred Miramontes and that the fight ended briefly because of the quick response by the bailiff and officers in the courtroom.
