A preliminary hearing for the former California Highway Patrol official charged with sexually molesting two underage girls about a decade ago was postponed today until Feb. 22.

The continuance was granted in jail court after defense attorney Bob Espinosa, who represents defendant John Swaim, cited a juvenile matter that is likely to take much of his time.

Swaim, who had been a lieutenant stationed in Winterhaven, has pleaded to the charges and remains free after posting bail. The preliminary hearing would determine whether there is enough evidence to have Swaim stand trial on four counts related to the alleged molestation of the girls.
