Mexicali municipal police said the suspects they arrested in connection with the shooting of an El Centro man over the weekend were gunmen who tried to kidnap and then kill him.
The man, identified by Mexicali authorities as El Centro resident Jose Barriga, suffered several gunshots during what sheriff's authorities suspect was also a botched armed robbery attempt.
Barriga, a farmer who owns land in Mexicali, managed to somehow evade his assailants and drive himself to the east Port of Entry on Saturday. Barriga, 57, was flown out to an undisclosed hospital for his injuries.
Three suspects were arrested in connection with Barriga's shooting and their ages ranged from 20 to 21, Mexicali police said in a press statement.
