CALEXICO — City Council unanimously approved the move of the city’s municipal elections from June to November beginning next year in an effort to increase voter turnout as well as save money.
The change, which was made at last week’s regular meeting, puts the election in line with general elections such as the state’s, county’s and most other Valley cities.
It also puts it at the same time as the local school board elections, the national presidential election and as all state initiatives are placed before the electorate.
“The cost saving is important, but it also will bring greater participation in the democratic process so that is why I’ve chosen to vote yes on it,” councilman Bill Hodge said.
The change will extend the terms of some City Council members that were set to expire in June.
A notice to voters about the change will be sent out upon approval by the Imperial County Board of Supervisors.
In relation, a special election was approved to be held June 5 for voters to decide if the positions of city treasurer and city clerk should be changed from elected to appointed positions.
Both are elected positions.
