Incumbents Sedalia L. Sanders, Efrain Silva, and challenger Jason Jackson were the leading vote getters for the three seats up for election for the El Centro City Council, according to the latest unofficial election results.
A total 6,349 votes from 25 precincts were counted, but these are only preliminary results as a significant number of provisional and absentee ballots have yet to be counted.
“This is a small race,” said county elections coordinator Debra Porter, adding she expects official results in five to 10 days.

Sanders, who led the field with 1,480 votes, or 23.31 percent, has been serving continuously on the City Council since 2003.
“The voters have spoken, so we will honor the voters,” said Sanders. “I just want to thank my campaign committee for their hard work,” said Sanders before congratulating the other candidates and commending the service of Jon Edney.
“If Mr. Jackson prevails, we (City Council) welcome him to the council,” she said noting the election results are still premature.

Silva, who received 1,461 votes, or 23.01 percent, would be serving for the second time on the City Council and is just finishing his first term as mayor.

“I’m very excited for the vote of confidence that the citizens of El Centro have given me,” said Silva. “I think we’ll have to see what the final (election) results are,” he said, and “whoever my fellow council members are, we’ll have to continue working as a team.”

Jackson is so far the third in the race with 1,316 votes, or 20.73 percent, beating out Edney by a handful of votes. This is the fourth time Jackson has sought a seat on the City council.
“It’s hard to really claim victory until all the votes are counted. There is certainly the possibility that the results (could) change,” he said.

“But I’m confident that the trend will remain,” he said, adding, “I hope I can make those people that voted for me proud.”

Challenger Gustavo Reza, who lagged behind early in the race, congratulated Silva, Sanders and Jackson. “I think they are going to be very beneficial to the city,” he said, adding, “I want to thank everyone that voted.”
