Imperial Irrigation District has announced the launch of a Refrigerator Recycling Program to help residential customers save energy and money.
Through this convenient and environmentally friendly program, qualifying customers can have their inefficient, working refrigerators and/or freezers picked up free of charge and properly recycled. Participating customers will receive a $50 incentive for each qualifying unit with a maximum of two per household.
“We feel it’s important for customers to understand that although their second refrigerators may be convenient, they are also costing them money,” said Sabrina Barber, IID assistant energy manager. “Second refrigerators, especially those located in garages, can use up to two to three times more energy than new energy-efficient models.”
Appliances scheduled for pick-up must be in working (cooling) order, clean and empty, with an inside measurement between 10 to 27 cubic feet (standard size refrigerators and freezers). All appliances collected through the program will be permanently removed from service and properly recycled by IID’s contractor, ARCA Inc. at its Southern California facility. State-of-the-art recycled processes will prevent the release of ozone-depleting substances, greenhouse gases, PCBs, mercury, batteries and oil into the environment.
