View from the Pew: Thanksgiving should be a lifetime, not just a day

November 23, 2012

Well, Thanksgiving is over. As we sit on the couch, watching football, burping pumpkin pie, we start thinking of what Black Friday stores we will hit. That’s what Thanksgiving is about, isn’t it?

The green and yellow (blecch) of the Packers mixed with the lime green and dark blue (blecch) of the Seahawks in a huge scrum in the corner of the end zone during the last football game the replacement refs handled.

  • Celebrating love of shiny cars and my wife

I have owned all kinds of cars over the years: a ’66 Lincoln Continental, a ’65 Ford Econoline pickup, a series of Mercury Cougars, a ’49 Dodge Coronet, a Scion xB (the toaster), and my ’68 Mustang. They all have one thing in common, I don’t keep them for very long. As I write this, the Mustang is on Craigslist for sale or trade. I have had it for a couple of years, and it has been fun, but it is time for a new toy.

After a shot, tests, scans and four hours of waiting, the emergency room doctor walked in and said, “Mr. Godsey, your problem is that you are old.”

I’ve seen kids on television lately talking about how rough they have it, what with all of the technology they have to learn to deal with, and the fast pace of the world they live in.

  • View from the Pew: Set an example, and quit the Jesus-juking

    June 16, 2012

I posted something on Facebook the other day about real men trading one-night stands for a woman he can’t stand one night without. I thought the sentiment was awesome. Then somebody else responded with something really biblical and kind of out of context, saying that the sentiment was not very spiritual. I had been Jesus-juked.

As they went into Turn 4, the cars were tightly packed. The No. 24 Chevy was in between the 48 and the 17. Three cars doing 190 miles per hour, each weighing approximately 3,400 pounds and packed three wide, with just inches separating them. At the apex of the turn, the right rear tire of the middle car began to smoke. 75 laps of high speeds, cornering and a couple of rubs against other cars finally took its toll. The tire blew, and blew dramatically. Suddenly, the 24 car took a hard turn into the car on its left, then careened into the car on its right. The entire pack of 30 other race cars, all traveling close to the same speed saw a cloud of smoke and a pileup. How would they react? Some reacted well and missed the carnage, others not as well and joined in the wreckage. When it was all said and done, eight cars were destroyed and four or five others needed new tires or some type of repair. Welcome to NASCAR racing.

  • View from the Pew: God is in the disappointments

Since last May I have been studying for my Master’s in Business Administration at Western Governors University. I was hoping to be done this May and be finished in one year. I could have done it, but spent about three months where motivation was hard to find. It put me behind in time and I will end up taking about a year and a half instead of a year. Disappointing.

When I was a kid, I was horrible at basketball. In fact, I would have to improve just to be considered lousy.

I hosted a meeting for this Jesus guy in my house. He was a really good teacher, so when his followers approached me about using my house, I quickly agreed. It never hurts your status in the town to host somebody up and coming in society, so we set the date.

This morning as I hugged and kissed my wife goodbye, my hands touched her face in a tender moment. It was a sweet way to start the day, and I loved it.
