Mata event has been helping for 20 years

Posted: Monday, April 8, 2013 12:00 am

Over the weekend, the friends and family of Calipatria son Nathan “Nate” Mata came together in Rademacher Park for the 20th tri-tip barbecue scholarship fundraiser in his name, which has become a lasting two-decade legacy of the man and his love of sports.

All proceeds from the barbecue, and the boys’ basketball tournament that has also born Mata’s name for the past 18 years, goes to funding some level of scholarships for Calipatria High School student-athletes looking to further their education.
