Last Sunday there was a great article about some of our local Latino leaders. I do know Jaime Silva, superintendent for the very good Heber School District. In addition to being a great administrator, Mr. Silva is a school counselor.

Feb. 4-8 is National School Counselor Week. We all know about the many ways school counselors help students with academic, vocational and emotional needs. We need to maintain and expand school counseling, as one of the many violence prevention strategies of contemporary society. Counselors, like Jaime Silva, also excel at management.

I was pleased to see Mr. Silva get respect for being a leader and a Latino that has overcome in order to achieve. We have many counselors who have become outstanding administrators. Imperial Unified is the district with the highest percentage of counselor administrators. Counselors are not only helpers for students, but also systems. February is the love month, so show some love for those counselors in your schools, whether they are in student services or school leadership. God bless each and every one of the Valley’s counselors.
