I know this question was asked before, but I don’t remember what the answer was. On Main Street in Brawley there are a few restaurants that have a sign “RIGHT TURN ONLY.” Can you get a ticket if you exit safely and turn left on to Main Street? If so, then why can you turn left out of other businesses on Main Street? - Wants to go Left, Brawley

Rather than just point this letter writer to the answer we had previous published, Probe would like to take the opportunity to reiterate to the public that making a left turn from a business along Main Street that has a “Right Turn Only” sign is illegal. We are actually encouraged by the fact that someone would seek such a clarification, rather than simply decide for themselves to ignore the traffic signs.

The reason that not every business along Main Street has the signs prohibiting left turns is based on a determination made by the California Department of Transportation, said a Brawley Police Department official.

When deciding whether a sign is appropriate for any given location, Caltrans will consider the location of the business, the amount of traffic the business typically generates as well as the general amount of traffic the route receives, according to Brawley police.

While most commuters can be depended on to follow the sign’s instructions, past observations suggest that motorists will nonetheless attempt to make a left turn when traffic along Main Street is light, a Brawley police representative said. Motorists caught violating the “Right Turn Only” can expect to be issued a citation, which typically carries a fine.
