Every historic event needs a song.

In the case of VCU’s never-ending Cinderella story, there are several, including an Anhayla and Eric Stanley’s song, “Hustle Hard,” which can be seen on Youtube.

But there’s one song that caught the ear of the university, getting posted on VCU’s website and being played in the Seigel Center when VCU put Kansas in ICU.

“Black and Gold” is a clever rip of the Pittsburgh Steelers song, “Black and Yellow.”

It was recorded and sung by VCU student David Roberts, AKA  Da Raw.

He’s just 19, already a junior at VCU, despite breaking his neck in an accident at the beach his freshman year.

“It turned out to be a pretty interesting semester,” he recalled.

He’s an honor student studying nuclear engineering,  learning how not to blow up.

But he’d love for his musical career to explode.

Songwriting is his passion. He’s written hundreds.

As he watched VCU’s NCAA run, he picked up his pen. He’s glad people are picking up the song.

“I’ll be walking down the street, and someone will drive by, playing my song,” he said, “sometimes singing along to it, just blaring it.”

But the song’s not just about basketball. It’s about VCU love, Richmond love. Roberts said the school is an amazingly diverse and fascinating place. He’s glad the school and the city are getting a closer look.

And if his song helps people look at VCU and RVA, all the better.
