Ever since Central Union High wrestler Micah Perez set foot on the mat as a freshman he has been a force to reckoned with, from winning CIF to placing at the state meet.

Each year he has been recognized for his accomplishments and again this year, his junior year, he has been named the All-Imperial Valley Press Wrestler of the Year for the third year in a row.

“It means a lot to me for just being who I am in this Valley and in this second to be the wrestler of the year for three years in a row is a great honor,” said the 17-year-old Perez. “I’m glad to receive it.”

Perez competed in the 113-pound weight class for the Spartans this season where he posted a 42-3 record on the season.

Perez finished the season by placing third in the state. It was a big accomplishment but one that was more challenging than ever.

“This year was tough … I had an injury the whole season that forced me to find different ways to manipulate the pain in order to wrestle,” Perez said. “I had to find new techniques and ways to wrestle for every tournament and that was tough.

“But I’m happy with what I accomplished knowing I did all that with a back injury. It felt good to get that far but I know I could have done a lot better.”

Perez will head into his final high school season next year and with the hopes of having a full recovery he looks to have an unstoppable season.

“If I’m able to heal up like I want to then I’ll be able to train harder than ever … like I’ve been wanting to for years so I can show people all that I’m capable of.” Perez said. “If I don’t heal all the way I’m just going to work on perfecting my techniques to achieve the goals I have set for myself.”

Perez had the biggest individual season from the Valley this year but it was the Brawley Union High Wildcats who were able to continue its rein over the Valley and CIF.

The Wildcats captured their 18th straight IVL title and 12th straight CIF title earning head coach Tony Leon, All-IVP Coach of the Year honors.

“Every day in the room I try to preach of hard work, being consistent, getting better on improving from match to match and placing at tournaments,” Leon said. “I think kids nowadays are starving, not so much for affection, but for that motivation and as a coach I try to help them by finding what motivates each kid.

“I try to find what gets them fired up and excited so they can push towards their greatest capabilities.”

The Wildcats finished second at the sections Masters Tournament and look to continue improving.

“I think we had a young team this year and they were hungry and I kept telling them our goal is not just to be CIF champs but better,” Leon said. “And they took that and ran with it this year.

“Hopefully we are capable of doing more next year by sending more kids to state and placing higher at state.”
