The Biggest and Baddest Battle of the Badges will get swinging with the weigh-in set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Brunswick Zone XL in El Centro.
“We’re very excited for this weigh-in because it is the second time having two legitimate female bouts and we’re bringing back the female championship bout,” Sparta Boxing Club owner Fernando Lara said.
Sparta is working in conjunction with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Activities League and the Imperial Valley College Public Safety Training Academy to coordinate the event. The three will split the proceeds that will help pay for various programs for youths in the Valley.
The event has 11 fights, including two exhibition fights. Fighters represent every agency from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, fire department agencies and even some from Yuma and San Diego.
“Everybody is scheduled to be there,” Lara said of the weigh-in Saturday. “This is the first time it will be held at Brunswick … it’s bigger, better and it’s just gonna be inside and a centralized area so people can attend.”
The boxing event is set for April 14 at the Airporter Inn in Imperial. The gates open at 5 p.m. with the first bout set for 7 p.m.
Advance tickets are $15 for general admission and $25 for ringside. The day of the event, admission is $20 for general and $30 for ringside. VIP tables for eight are $300.
“Ticket sales are a little higher than they were last year so we’re expecting more people,” Lara said. “We’re expecting more people, new people to the show, obviously having new fighters and we’re just hoping that we get blessed with good weather because it is an outside event.”
