The El Centro Sector Morale, Welfare and Recreation coordinated a dodgeball tournament that featured eight teams made up of law enforcement agencies from the Imperial Valley at the Seanez Sports Academy on Saturday in Imperial.
“We were throwing around fundraiser ideas, someone came up with dodgeball and we ran with it,” said Cindy Moreno of the El Centro Sector Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Registration was $120 and only law enforcement agencies were invited.
Funds were to help organize events for the sector and the Imperial Valley Enforcement Memorial.
“The turnout was great. We were hoping for at least 10 teams,” Moreno said. “Looks like everybody is having a good time.”
Balls Deep, a group of correctional officers from the Calipatria State Prison, took home the championship.
“It was a very fun game. We all haven’t played dodgeball since elementary school,” said Balls Deep team captain Manuel Provencio. “It was good, we all had fun.”
Moreno, a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, said the tournament might be an annual event and may even be open to the public.
“Not sure, we’ll see how it goes. This year we were able to get a couple of agencies,” Moreno said.
Balls Deep is already planning to defend its title, sooner than next year.
“Of course, hopefully they’ll have it again in the next couple of months,” Provencio said.
