The Southwest High boys’ basketball team went from leading the Imperial Valley League to being winless before its league game against Calexico High on Tuesday.
The Eagles forfeited its previous five games after officials discovered one of their players was ineligible, Central Union High School District Superintendent C. Thomas Budde said.
CIF-San Diego Section rules state that athletes cannot play outside of their respective high school athletic teams during their respective season.
The player in question was found to be playing in a team in Mexicali.
Budde said Southwest officials Tuesday sent a letter to the CIF office explaining the violation.
The Eagles were 7-15 overall and 3-1 in league before Tuesday’s decision and before their game against Calexico.
After the forfeits, Southwest drops to 2-20 overall and 0-4 in league.
Of those five games, Calexico, Brawley and Central all received wins. The Spartans had also previously beaten the Eagles on Feb. 15.
Before Tuesday’s IVL games, Central improved to 4-0 in league, Calexico to 3-1 and Brawley to 1-3.
