The Southwest High School swim team soundly swept Central Union High in an Imperial Valley League meet at Central on Thursday afternoon.

Southwest’s boys won 128-39 while the girls won 108-59.

“I love how my team is swimming,” Mariela Landaverde said. “They’re being positive.

“I love how everyone is being together and how they know what they are doing,” she said.

Landaverde, an 18-year-old senior, won the 200-meter individual medley, placed third in the 100-meter breaststroke and helped with the 400-meter freestyle relay for Southwest’s girls.

Sophomore Airy Estrada, 15, won the 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly and helped with the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay.

“It’s a fast team this year,” Estrada said of her Eagles. “They’re like my second family. I think we spend more time here (at the pool) than with our regular family.”

On the boys’ side, 19-year-old senior Hector Wong won the 200 IM and placed second in the 100 butterfly, while helping Southwest’s boys win the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

“We have a really strong team this year,” Wong said. “Our boys might be able to place at CIF this year in the freestyle relay,” he said, “which would be the first time for Southwest.”

As for the Spartans, while outmatched in the lanes Thursday they have been getting better and better.

“My kids have improved a lot from the beginning of the year,” Central coach Chandra Seaman said. “They’re where they’re supposed to be right now.”

Central’s lone winner of the meet was Emily Magin who won the 100 breaststroke.
