Faced with the challenge of playing a seasoned and more experienced team, the Imperial Valley Knights minor league football team beat the Las Vegas Cobras, 48-12, in a Great West Conference game Saturday in Imperial.
“The Cobras are a bigger team with a lot more experience than us. They have been in the league for about 12 years,” Knights head coach Sean Johnson said. “Our guys played great. I was pleased with the special teams. Our defense came through for us again despite some miscues in the secondary and our offense was scoring some points.”
The Knights used a balanced attack on offense to lead them to a 48-point outburst.
“Our running game and passing game are getting better. For a lot of our games it has been our defense scoring points.” Johnson said. “We had easily over 100 yards running the ball and about 200 yards passing, so it was nice to see that balance.”
The Knights (5-1 GWC) will next travel to play the San Diego Thundercats at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sportsplex USA in Santee.
“Next we have the Thundercats and they are tough team, and if we are able to beat them then we will get the No. 1 seed in our playoffs, meaning we would have all home games,” Johnson said. “This week we are just going to be going over the fundamentals like ball handling skills and foot work to be ready for them.”
The Knights’ next home game will be against the Palm Spring Coyotes at 4:30 p.m. March 3 at Imperial High.
