IMPERIAL — Many children excel at sports, and still others excel at academics. But it takes a special kind of youth to be great in both. It takes somebody like Dakota Jones.

The sixth-grader from here was recently named to the 2012 Pop Warner All-American Scholars Second Team.

“It feels good because I’m the only one in Imperial that actually made it for the scholarship,” Jones, who is 11 years old, said.

The honor requires a minimum 96 percent GPA. Out of 400,000 Pop Warner players, just 3,800 were named to last year’s second team.

“It took dedication, getting good grades every time, and being in honor society every time I get a report card,” Jones said. “I also helped the community by mentoring kids.”

The Frank Wright Middle School student said he hopes his accolades will inspire his peers to never settle for anything less than their best.

“I would encourage other kids to be in this,” Jones said. “That way they would feel honored for being one of the 400,000 kids to be in it, so they can always feel good about themselves.”
