BRAWLEY — A tough field of 31 golfers teed off in the 84th annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Tournament at the Del Rio Golf Course here Wednesday.
Of the 31 golfers who battled for low scores, 16 were able to earn a spot in the champions division in the tournament.
Low qualifier for the day was first-time Lettuce tournament competitor, Brawley’s Brett Mamer (0 handicap), firing 69 for 18 holes. Runner up for the day was El Centro’s Trevor Tagg (0 handicap), shooting 73.
Filling out the rest of the flight and a chance for the title this year will be defending champion John Currier, Matt Jiggins, Steve Lyerly, Brian Schmitt, Mike Andrews, Quay Smith, Garret Fargo, Tom Mueller, Steve Rogers, Sean Callens, Justin Eyer, Blaine Carian, Ryan Mamer and Dan Eugenio.
The championship flight tees off at 9:30 this morning. Joining the championship players will be 11 flights of 176 golfers as they hit the fairways at 7:30 this morning for the first day of regulation match play. Play continues through Sunday.
