“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” This saying came to light Saturday night at the Queens of Fury all-female boxing event that organizers deemed a big success.

“We literally sold out,” event coordinator and Sparta Boxing Gym owner Fernando Lara said.

Lara coordinated the event in conjunction with the El Centro Police Activities League, where the event was held.

“This is the first event since that break-up that we had and it was a goldmine, it was a hit,” Lara said.

The event featured 10 fights that culminated with three title belt fights.

Norma Gonzalez of Sparta beat Jessica Kizziah of ATAP MMA of Holtville by decision in the lightweight title fight.

In the middleweight title fight, Isali Quirarte of La Gente Boxing in Brawley beat Alejandra Lopez of Yuma Fight Academy by decision.

Nayra Martinez of R&R Boxing in Calexico beat Adriana Wong of Team United in El Centro in the heavyweight title fight.

“These girls did an outstanding job getting up there and doing this,” Lara said.

He also said the event was more of a test to see if an all-female boxing event would attract interest.

“It was a test for a bigger event that we’re going to have in October, again with El Centro PAL, that’s going to benefit breast cancer awareness,” Lara said. “I wanted to see how it was going to go … now that I see it went well, I’m going full force on it in a bigger venue of course.

“I think together, PAL and Sparta really did well together and I think we’re definitely going to have some future events together.”
